We have just returned from Xi’an where we had the incredible opportunity to visit one of the world’s most important historical sights. The Army of Terracotta Warriors stand guard over the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the unifier of ancient China and builder of the Great Wall. This incredible army remained buried underground for over two thousand years until peasants tried to drill a well in the area in 1974. Excavations have been ongoing ever since and the archaeological finds have been astounding. Over three thousand warriors and horses are on display across three different pits, with no two faces alike. Seeing them lined up, ready for battle, is surreal.
A few warriors are displayed in cases so visitors can see them up close. It’s remarkable that some traces of color can still be seen on the clay. We overheard a tour guide telling their group that the officer’s rank can be determined by the shoes. The more turned up at the tip, the higher the rank.
Thousands of bronze weapons and animals have also been unearthed, as well as two complete bronze chariots with their horses. Makes you wonder what other treasures are out there waiting to be discovered.
