When our visiting friends wanted a taste of the “real” China, I took them to the Dajing Lu market in the old section of town. My mom and I stumbled upon this lively locale when we were hunting for the remnants of Shanghai’s old city wall and I knew it would deliver local flavor in spades. This time, we continued onto Luxiangyuan Lu where things really got interesting. Live chickens, ducks, crabs and frogs are sold right next to fresh vegetables and jugs of homemade liquor. We almost needed to pick up our own jug after walking past the tray of raw brains!
What’s the most colorful street market you’ve ever seen?

I remember this street. It’s amazing how just a few streets off the main area things can change so drastically. I like where you live better! Mom

The change is dramatic. Even at the end of this block were skyscrapers and storefronts and the trappings of modernity. It’s nice that these pockets of traditional living remain, though I’m afraid their days may be numbered!
