We brought a few pieces of art with us to Shanghai in need of framing because I figured we could have it done here for a lot less than it would cost in the States. The trouble was that we didn’t know where in Shanghai to go. Then I heard about this place called Painter Street where all manner of art can be procured. We went to check it out this weekend and sure enough, the street was lined with stall after stall selling paintings of all types. Whether you are in the market for a landscape, an imitation Van Gogh or something more modern, you are sure to find it on Painter Street. You can even have your portrait made!
We came across this work-in-progress that still showed the pencil lines from the sketch. Everything here is hand-painted by talented artists.
Most of the stalls offer options for custom framing, even if it’s for art you brought from home. We took our pieces around to a few different stalls until we found just the right frames. We had five things done and the total cost came to less than US$40! The price was so low that at first Hubby thought it was per piece, but it was actually the total. I’m going back to pick everything up later this week though I probably could have had them delivered on the back of a bicycle.

Good price on having pictures framed. Would probably have cost a couple hundred in Michaels. Mom

My dream street! I have so many items to be framed. (Thanks for the reminder…now that the walls will soon be painted, I need to get on that.)

Jan, it’s too bad you can’t bring them here to be framed when you visit!

I’m heading there on Friday – I didn’t know it was so cheap to get things framed though that is great.

That was without any bargaining, too! If you are having a painting made, you will want to shop around and haggle hard. They all do pretty much the same quality of work. I found the best price with a guy up the stairs at the back of the street. Framing I just have done in the stalls close to the entrance. Have fun!
