I recently read about the Jing’an Sculpture Park in Shanghai, and though it wasn’t mentioned in my guidebook or shown on any map, I had to try to find it and the two dozen sculptures housed within. The magazine article thoughtfully included the address (128 Shimen Er Lu) so it was relatively easy to find.
We had so much fun exploring the park in an attempt to locate all the sculptures. Best of all, it was quiet and peaceful with hardly anyone else around. Who knew such serenity could be found in Shanghai? As for the sculptures, they were as wacky and fantastic as I’d hoped. Our favorite installation was the ostrich surrounded by heads. Why are there so many heads?? I also thoroughly enjoyed the bull pen and the orange basketball hoop tree. What a goofy place!
Other sculptures just left me scratching my head. I’m still perplexed by the girl riding the horned turtle. Art is clearly in the eye of the beholder.
As we were leaving, we spotted a man in teal silk practicing tai chi. I loved the juxtaposition of the ancient tradition in front of the modern art. It was the perfect end to our lovely afternoon in the park.
Have you ever visited a sculpture park?
