I love Indian food. In the States we used to eat Indian take-out all the time. In Shanghai, not so much. That is, until we discovered Masala Art Indian restaurant. I’m about to make a bold statement, but this some of the best Indian food we’ve eaten, and we’ve lived in New York City which is home to its fair share of curry joints.
The unassuming facade belies the authentic feast awaiting you inside, served by waitstaff in traditional Indian garb. Even the free appetizer of papadum and a trio of sauces is a delight. We all fought over the zesty green sauce which I like to pour over my samosa. The highlight of the first course is always the delightfully creamy hara tawa kebab. Fried patties of spinach, peas, lentils, chickpeas and cilantro are stuffed with crushed walnuts and cottage cheese and are excellent, especially when dipped in the cool cucumber raita. We’ve eaten at this restaurant several times and this dish always makes the cut.
We usually have a hard time deciding what to order for the main courses since everything is so good and our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Our rotation consists of the decadent and scrumptious butter chicken, fiery chicken or lamb tikka masala and a savory dish of stewed vegetables, usually dal. A steady supply of naan helps us mop up all the deliciousness and cold beer keeps the heat in check. We brought our friends here who were visiting from the States and it was one of their favorite meals!
Masala Art Address: 397 Dagu Road, Jing'an, Shanghai, China Pricing: 200-300 RMB for four family-style dishes

It’s a little spicy but you might like it. The flavors are rich and they use a lot of butter and cream. Maybe we can try it when you’re here.
